If you're patient, it is very, very possible to find a place for good money in London. I'd recommend southeast. Not just because I'm biased being born and raised here, but your money stretches much further than other areas for some pretty decent housing, and you are still within a short travel time on public transport to the fun stuff.

Where I live, New Cross Gate, I am moving out of a two bed next week which is £1000 (special case though as I've been there forever and she's raising the rent) to a one bed which is £900. Both are in Telegraph Hill which is beautiful, and 15 minutes on the train from Shoreditch High Street. Now is a really good time to look in my area actually, as there's a very high student population due to nearby Goldsmiths University and lots of them will have recently come to the end of their tenancies. Some good deals to be had.

Are London wages really so much more to make paying 5x as much in rent worth it?

depends what sector you work in of course, but in skilled jobs I would imagine so yes.

Nigel: Walthamstow is alright, some nice houses out there and it's pretty accessible on the Victoria Line, even quicker if you want to get into the City: takes like 15 minutes into Liverpool Street. As far as bars and stuff there isn't too much, but house prices round there have been going up a lot as the whole Hackney>Clapton>Walthamstow direction expands, so I'd imagine cool stuff should start popping up bit by bit. Good market too. Shit shopping centre which has a Magic Corn stand, the very hallmark of a shit shopping centre. Good choice for chicken shops though.

True

I'd much rather be back in Liverpool or Manchester than London

have lived in Sheffield, Brighton and Bristol as well and preferred all of them to London too…

like the area where I live now (Kentish Town) and work (Bloomsbury) but rents are ridiculous and are no way justified by the supposedly 'better' quality of life down here (imo)

only thing keeping me here is work - which I think is the same story for a lot of people who'd rather move elsewhere

Of course you'd think Brum is terrible if you've only ever been to Broad St. Far more to the city than that. It's like basing your opinion of London on Euston Road.

Not basing my opinion on that at all, travel there about 30 times a year. Solihull has nice parts but Brum is shit

no way, thats the point, sounds like fun to work like a cunt 80hrs a week and get home at 8pm having been crotch rubbed on the underground 8times to go to bed in my garden apartment with 287 sq ft of living space.
on the plus side there are 27 trendy pulled pork burger joints within a 100M radius.
Love London but its gotta be a hard slog no?
