I really like Milan. Duomo is a must, then just wondering around the main sites from a guide book.
I have stayed at Hotel Mediolanum and Hotel Cristoforo Colombo, and recommend them both.
Hotel Cristoforo Colombo I have stayed at several times. A couple of cheap nice places to eat on a evening, and it easy to walk to the Duomo but there is a metro stop 1 minute away for easy access to the Duomo.
Both of them are only a 5 / 10 minute walk from the train station. The bus from the airport also dropped us off at the train station.

i went to some weird but truly amazing bar…behind what looked like a garage door but then opened up into this garden whereby seats and booths where hidden behind trees and shrubs..
so long ago but one of the best places i have been especially at night…
few decent places around some of the canals as well.

Yes mate, been there an uncountable number of times! Worked there for years while i was studying at uni.
It's definitely worth going. Obviously it also depends on what's on that particular night. Opera might be long and boring if you're not too much into it, concerts are the best imo and ballets are realy enjoyable. Also, a lot does the seat you have and where you buy tickets from because if you don't use the official website you might end up paying a lot for shit seats!
When will you be here?

Just looked on tripadvisor and both the hotels were in the top 25 when I booked them originally (2 years ago). Stayed in Hotel Cristoforo Colombo last year and it was fine.
Last year I also stayed in Hotel Sanpi Milano - again not far from the train station, and I would reccommend.
I guess others will be able to suggest great hotels (probably at a price), but for me these were all reasonably priced and provided excellent value for money.

Get off the underground at Garibaldi, have a look at the new Unicredit tower and square underneath it. You can grab an ice cream from Grom in one of the corner of the square.
Walk along Corso Como, stop at Corso Como 10 for a quick look or a drink, then reach Piazza XXV Aprile. Hi-Tek if you read through the Interior Design thread or Eataly for some nice food to be brought back home.
Keep walking on Corso Garibaldi, Buttero store on your right hand side and Space 23 for kicsk on your left hand side.
Usually nice birds in the area, so keep your eyes open. Always straight, you can find Hermann Miller and Fritz Hansen showrooms if you're interested and then a nice church + square.
At the end of Corso Garibaldi, head to the right if you wanna go to Nike Stadium for some kicks otherwise keep going straight. At the next square, have a look at Antonia, very nice shop just next to the fish shop.
If you keep going you reach Piazza Cordusio, there you see the Duomo on your left, the castle on your right with the Expo gate in front of it.
If you need anything more specific just let me know

Arcinboldi is in the middle of nowhere, i'd suggest eating\drinking somewhere else before\after the concert.
You can stay around Isola, which is really cool and not too far by taxi\uber. You might have a drink at Deus Cafè there.
There's plenty of restaurants around Duomo, a lot depends on how baller you want to be.
Trussardi Alla Scala and Don Carlos are top choices, but pricey.
Refettorio Simplicitas is a nice cheaper alternative. Signorvino is also very good and there's a great choice of wines.
Gino Sorbillo and Fresco & Cimmino are good option for traditional pizza.
A bit further out, but not too far, close to the station, there's a really nice place for Milanese food. It's called Osteria del Treno.
If you can consider places a bit out of the city centre Il Luogo di Aimo e Nadia, Gavroche e Ristorante Guerrini da Vic are top choices.
