is your 4 grand all you've got?

Guido is right - cars do break down and have things go wrong with them, and it can cost a lot

I've spent the best part of 700 quid (all unexpected) on my "reliable run around" this year, and it's a fuck of a lot less complicated and more reliable than an MGF

I have 6 grand, but that had to include insurance which is around 2 grand alone (For the 1.6 MG) I guess it would be cheaper if I didnt get a 2 seaters/rag top etc

Like T_dot said get an Audi A3, VW Golf, BMW.

Those cheap sports cars look shit & are shit. The ONLY benefit of having one is for through the summer having the top down (On the three days per summer we get you could do this) But summer is over and you'll have nothing but trouble through the autum/winter with those cheap rag tops, leaking etc. You might be thinking you'll get loads of attention in your 'sports car', but no one is gunna give two shits, everyone knows you can pick them up for 4k, and they are that cheap for a reason.

If you have to get one, I'd go with the MR2 Roadster. Toyota are more reliable, and actually think they look a bit better. The MX5 looks shite, and MG looks better but is shite.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2001-AUDI-A3-1-9-TDI-SE-BLACK_W0QQitemZ300254451176QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item300254451176&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A7%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

that one has high mile but boviously will be able to find one with lower, for around the 4.5k mark.

I meant more are you going to be spending all your savings on the car / insurance, or will you have something left in reserve?

because cars do and will cost money over time, and when they're out of warranty that can cost a fair whack

Oh yeah, 6 grand isnt all my money in the world Smiling This is just money I specifically saved for a car and insurance.

I totally have no idea what to get at the moment!

Surprised insurance is that much for your age to be honest. 25 is the age with a really big drop in insurance. I take it you haven't got any no claims, but I thought it would be a lot less than that.

What is insurance like on other cars?

No no claims as its my first car. The £2k quoted is for the MG I posted in the other thread.

Bang 4K on a 1.6 ford focus. Insurance should be Ok, cheapish to run, will do 90 on the motorway, pretty reliable, cheapish to fix, practicle and look ok. Run it for 2 years and sell on for not much loss. By that point you'll be getting about 40% discount on your Insurance if you don't claim.

Worth looking to see what the road tax will go up to for certain cars as well.

Lookin for a new car myself actually, got about 6k to splash and four years no claims (i'm 24 years old). Would like something around 2 years old and under 60,000 miles. Have got a short list of a seat leon and Alfa romeo 147 so far. I'm not too hot on cars so any recommendations would be cool.

I dont see the point in having a car you dont REALLY want, just to save a few pounds on insurance in a few years time?

Do not purchase either of those two cars.
