I have always thought of going down this avenue but whenever i have looked into it I have gone for a normal purchase.
I think it makes sense if:
- you want a new car with no hassle regarding breakdowns etc.
- you don't do very high mileage
- you don't have enough cash for an outright purchase or you want to utilise that cash elsewhere
- you are not that interested in optional extras
- you are not that interested in the highest performance models
- you don't mind you are essentially renting so you have to give the car back in the same condition or face high charges
Having said that most new cars are specced well from factory now and if you search for physical stock instead of build slots you may get a car with alot of options for a good price. A new Golf GTI or Toyota Supra for 300-350 a month is quite good tbh.
My missus got a Merc E250 Cabriolet 3 years ago, old shape facelift with 40k miles and decent options from Benz dealer with 1yr warranty for 17.5k. Sold it last week after 3 years for 10.5k privately after doing 45k miles ontop. Ran it with no warranty for 2 years but no problems. So overall cost us 7k for 36 months or £195 p/m. If we had got the new shape brand new on lease with the same engine, those options and that mileage we would have been looking at easy 450p/m + 9 upfront so a total of £20.5k inc. fees. Not to mention having to fix all the curbed alloys and scratches.

If the figures add up it's easy and worthwhile. I'm only thinking of buying as I want an SUV for family duties and the sort of thing we'd like is silly money on a lease. Have a look on Pistonheads forum, there's a lease deals thread in the car buying section.

Haven't drive one yet, but have a GLC which its very likely based on. Expect a pretty poor ride quality with the AMG wheels.
Apart from that I quite like the look of them, looks like a mini G wagon. Interior is nice too.
Thanks… yeah i like the boxy styling and the interiors are great… 7 seats will be useful for the Mrs too. As much as i like the AMG styling, was worried about the stiff ride on them but will see if i can find one to test.

Watch out for cash! Was in the news the other day, a couple sold their BMW and the £20 notes all had the same serial number.
Another one in the news, the customer was test driving. When it came to the end, he pretended to get out but didn't and drove off. So always ask for the key before departing the car and obviously get the license etc. before a test drive.
There are alot of scare stories but i have sold multiple cars privately and generally it has been very safe and worth the time and effort.

I've leased a couple of cars, currently have an A35 AMG because it was a brilliant deal. Few notes, look after it or you'll possibly get stung when you hand back, you can't be fussy on which make/model/spec etc if you're looking for a really good deal, I generally look at 3 or 6 months for first payment, get GAP insurance.
Current deal is 8k p/a mileage, £340 a month and 6 months up front. Servicing not included. I had a Leon FR 184 a few years ago for £250 a month inc. servicing on 10k p/a. If you shop about you'll find a good deal on something but there aren't as many deals floating around at the moment as there were so I'll probably buy my next car in a few months.

Very basic question but currently in the process of selling my first car privately, just wondering if theres any tips/recommendations (apart from the obvious logbook etc.) to do that I may not have thought about?
