Should be booking my trip to NY this wkend - going on Boxing Day till 29th…

Does anyone know of any sites where I can see if there are any decent gigs going on during that time… I know they'll be scarce cos of the time of year etc etc - but Id love to go see a band play…

How about the weather - I hear its freeeeezing?!

I was there for Christmas/New Year 2003/4 and sales where on but in some places they had started early in others they hadnt started yet.

Barneys/Saks both sales had started before xmas so most of the good items/sizes had gone and they already had spring/summer lines in stock.

NDG,Costume National,Helmut Lang,J Lindeberg sales had pretty much ended bar a few items items in large sizes.

APC,DQM,Stussy/Headporter,Number (N)ine, Alife, Commes Des Garcon none of there sales had started and I was there until 5th/6th of Jan.

Ive never really had many bargins in the states as there prices are even higher than the UK on most designer gear, and I get the impression the sales arent that much of a big deal as they are over here. I mean most shops sales start the same time over here all competing with one another where as it seemed most stores over there just have sales when they want.

The other thing is over there they have sales much more often they seem to have mid season sales quite often or Labour Day sales that last for a day or a weekend which maybe why the xmas sales dont seem like a big deal.

Id spend more time getting out and about than trailing the shops only to find nice items that you can get in London for 50 pound cheaper.

IMO London is far better and cheaper. Still nice to bring back a few items though.

Weather can vary, Ive been there at xmas and its been crisp clear winter days. Cold but wrap up and needed sunglasses as can get so bright. Ive been there in Jan/Feb when its a foot of snow and blizzards. So id prepare for both as it can 'kin freezing.

Anyway have fun NY at xmas is great fun…has a great buzz about the place.

New York is crap when it comes to decents gigs around xmas (Boxing day to New Year). Last year most of it was like a freezing cold morgue so im guessing folk go somewhere else where theres a bit of life. If you want some decent gigs with cheap xmas sales, unrivalled worldwide, go to Milan, or any major European city for that matter.

Dont forget as a few people have already mentioned, USA stores dont include Vat or Tax on anything but add it later at the checkout, even in the sales. This aids the myth that New York is cheaper than UK. Much of the time it isnt.

Sorry to be blunt but as for making a wise choice for an xmas getaway, you made a dud with New York man.

Hello,

Looks like the family are going to spend the christmas in New York this year.

What's the best site for cheap flights?

And from experience, could anyone recommend a good hotel, family friendly, good location, a good christmas dinner, good santa look-a-like…mum wants the nearest thing to Home Alone 2.

(will be travelling: 23rd - 29th )

really appreciate the help

NYC is FREEZING at Christmas but I love going there at that time, regardless of the cold, wet feet and wind chill on top of that! Basically just wrap up and like dude said, lip balm and moisturiser is a must. Shopping wise, the best ones are around june julyish as there are often clearances and sample sales for street brands. You'll find some of the bigger names having sales, but my main concern when I'm there is getting stuff that I really can't get here in the UK, namely alife stuff for me, and then you'll have a wider range of stuff like supreme for cheaper than over here. Gigs wise I have no idea, but there's one club that nearly everyone was telling us to go to and as soon as I remember it I'll let you know. I get all festive n shit so I love Christmas time in the states.

can anyone recommend a good NY hotel for about $250 a night?

Best place to try is Quikbook.com - they normally have good deals. I stayed at the Hotel on Rivington last week - 10 minutes walk to SoHo. Hotel can be pricey but you may get a deal online somewhere. Great views from the room and the Lower East Side is a great area to stay in.

Font - just came back and stayed at the Hampton Inn Times Square North (8th and 51st) - a member of the Hilton chain. Price was around about that and it was more than sufficient. Booked it through ebookers

Famez - we booked through BA during a recent sale. Keep your eyes peeled for more airlines advertising sales.

On a foot note I didn't think the new yorker was that good mate for the price. It's expensive because it's NYC.

The Milford Plaza was around £140 a night when I went at Xmas 3 years ago. Right in the heart of Times Square, unbeatable location, clean rooms if a little small. Couldn't fault it for the price.
