Cheers for the hotel suggestions, they look good but all at least 100 usd more per night than i want to spend. Found a couple of half decent airbnb's so probably go for that. In terms of areas, ive been looking at greenpoint and williamsburg - are they good bets?

I stayed in Williamsburg. Its fine, but it is rough round the edges. I would rather have stayed on Manhattan, but my budget wouldn't stretch.

If you stay in Greenpoint you'll have the advantage of being right near the East River Ferry landing though, so wont have to get on the train every time you want to go to Manhattan. The ferry is a must do wherever you stay btw

If you do stay round there and want any bar/restaurant recommendations, just shout

thanks for the advice mate. I think we will probably stay in Greenpoint - waiting for host to get back to me on airbnb - so appreciate any bar/restaurant tips in the area.

I've stayed at the Herald Square hotel a few times, pretty good location and decent rates although haven't been for a few years now. 19 W 31st St.

People watching - go to Bryant Park behind the library (lots of the Sartorialist shots werw taken there)

There's a Blue Bottle Coffee there too (west 40th) + the Pain Quotidien stall will be doing iced coffees

I made a big Google Map with about 75 different food spots on it for my last trip - takeaways, cafes, restaurants etc. If anyone wants it for their trip then let me know.

What's the going rate for a cheap hotel around Williamsburg? More than likely going to air bnb it again, but curious to see if you can get a decent room for peanuts.

Anyone thinking of going out here soon ? Just looking at flights now, coming up at around 400 for the return, anything out there better ? I remember Virgin did a deal maybe last year for 250, that was around this time right ?

Got tickets the other day found nothing cheaper unless you go in January, best deal I found was 400 with luggage etc. already covered, Norwegian seems cheapest with hand luggage and no seat selection.

http://www.flightcentre.co.uk/flights/new-york

sometime this site does a "flash sale" - where they release 100 seats at a cheap cost on a decent airline. You never know what country they'll do it for until the night before, where they release an email. Just sign up to their mail list and you might be lucky and New York could be their next destination. I've had cheap tickets to Bangkok flying KLM with them before.
