datsun wrote: What are the Canary Islands like these days? Looking for a week away in the sun (> mid-20s during the day ideally) with the wife in mid-October, and don't really want to fly 8+ hrs. Greece another option maybe? Not fussed on Egypt.

Want somewhere that we can relax round a pool during the day, near enough to bars, restaurants etc for lunches and evenings that isn't going to be all boarded up/out of season.

Thanks
Puerto Pollensa in Mallorca is really nice mate. Lovely seaside main road that you can walk along into town, nice restaurants and bars, lively enough without being rowdy.

I went to Puerto Rico in gran canaria a few years ago and it was a fucking shithole. Weather was good though.

I'm going to California this summer. Usual road trip but would like to know a few things about cities and parks.

1. How many days in the big cities (LA, SD, LV, SF)? Which one\ones to prefer?

2. Thinking about going to Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Death Valley, Yosemite and Sequoia park. Anyone can recommend the best ones or if there's any hidden gem somewhere?

Thanks in advance!

Indeed, don't bother about LA, Vegas is nice for a few days max, would probably spend most time in SF. There are also lots of nice smaller towns along the coast to do a stop for a night or two.

Central LA ain't all that but worth checking out if only to say you've been there. Only need to spend a morning in Hollywood to see the sign and the hand/foot prints outside Mann's. I reckon Santa Monica is better if you're intent on spending a couple of days seeing the sights.

San Francisco is great. Bars, food, tourist things and general atmosphere etc - could fill a few days there easily, especially if you drive 10-20 miles up the coast and just chill on a beach for a day.

I've driven from San Fran to Vegas via Yosemite and Death Valley a couple of times (stop overnight in a place called Bishop which is kinda half way between the two). Absolutely awe inspiring drive. Just some amazing sights, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Some good info here Anto. Agree with others, LA's not all that, too huge - Santa Monica & beachfront are nice.

Yosemite is epic, helps if you're not afraid of heights Eye-wink

just got back from LA - best place I've been to. Think ill go back next year too.

If you stay in Santa Monica you're close enough to walk/ride/skate to different areas for shops and bars (i.e. Santa Monica 5th street/Venice Beach/Abbot Kinney).

Then you can drive to central LA for restaurants/bars/shops (Union/Selfedge etc), Hollywood hills/Malibu etc is great driving too. then you still have universal/disney/surfing.shooting options too

walk of fame area is like leicester square so give that a miss.

Anyone got any experience with Formentera? Looking to do a wee mini europe tour with paris, budapest and then fly down to there for a week of beach, food and chilled drinks. One question was about the ferry schedule between there and Ibiza. Anyone know if it runs through the night? Cheers

It didn't the last few times I went. Really nice place though, but pretty quiet and quite expensive to boot.

From what I could gather through the internetz it's mainly italians and the like that holiday in there. Am I right in thinking that it's not full up with typical costa del/canary island types? Not being a snob but just don't want to be in amongst large families and the like. Just want a week of relaxing.

Yeah mostly Italian and Germans. If you want a relaxing holiday it's a nice place to go imo.
