Cavtat is very nice. Not far from Dubrovnik, lots of nice places to eat/bars etc. Mlini which is in between Cavtat/Dubrovnik is also nice, quite interesting seeing the old war ruined hotels there!

No beaches though, but it was crazy hot.

Got weekend in Madrid in September, wheres a good area to stay? Theres a work thing in Majadahonda which is about 10KM to the NW. They'll pick up from Hotel so want to be close/in Madrid but not take the piss and be on the complete other side.

Any suggestions? Never been before.

Malasana is a cool little area to go out at night and it's kind of in the direction you need to be going. Can't comment on any hotels round there but had a couple of great nights round there last time I visited Madrid.

That names popped up a few times when searching for things in Madrid. Looks central as well on map.

Any recommendations on things to do, events, restaurants, bars, etc?

Check out the old Tobacco factory. Very interesting/politicised.

There is a nice little food hall/market in malasana which is worth a visit even just for drinks.

There is also a big one near the main square which is nice if you make it that far into town

We had a really nice meal at this place which is also in the malasana area

Loads of other bars and restaurants around there too so you won't be short of things to do.

Yeah found Rio expensive enough, really didnt live upto its party capital reputation for me either….we were struggling to find anywhere half decent midweek, weekends we just hit Lapa.
The main tourist attractions are great though - www.bealocal.com do some great tours, really enjoyed the favela one, went hang gliding too aswell as all the usual spots (christ the redeemer, lapa steps etc)

Bavice and Lapad beach (latter especially) are good

Buza bar is great. Pricier than other places, but it is worth it. During the day its great to be able to swim in the sea/dive off the rocks then just pop up the rock face and grab a beer. Get a table for the sunset one evening as well

D'vino is a great wine bar run by a decent Aussie fella. Do good tasting flights of local wines.

Walking the city walls is a must and the trip to Lokrum Island is a must (loads of great little lagoons etc and ruined monestary)

La Luna did really nice pizza. Good for lunch. One thing I did find was that Split had better restaurants
