Anyone got any tips for a California road trip? Got 16 days, flying in to San Francisco and home from San Diego end of August/early September. Looking to see SF, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, highway 1 and hope to get some surfing in too, thinking the beach towns in Socal…. Any recommendations very much appreciated Ubercool

Going on this tirp on 1st September.

My route is

San Fran (3 nights)

Mariposa (1 night)

Santa Cruz (1 night)

Carmel (1 night)

Santa Barbara (2 nights)

Santa Moncia/LA (3 nights)

San Diego (3 nights)

Found accommodation very expensive and opted for airbnb quite a bit.

you can get a cheap scooter for rent or just take a tuk-tuk.
Patong is dirty af but there is the most going on. with mrs I would stay somewhere more quiet tbh.

Great trip!

Unless your unchangeable maybe sacrifice one of the stops in between frisco and la, Yosemitie is so nice I'd stay as long as you can in mariposa, it's not that far from Yosemitie park but once you reach the park it takes around 45 mins to one hour to actually drive down the road network. So your round trip / daily commute is around 2.5 hours.

I stayed downtown and found it very practical, but I liked a lot Coronado, although a bit posh, and Ocean Beach, very laid back village vibe with surf shops, cafe, etc…good if you want to surf too

No, I went to La Jolla and Point Loma around San Diego.

Stopped in Huntington Beach\Newport Beach on the way down from LA. I found both quite disappointing personally

Yeah we thought we might pass Huntingdon, seems like it might be a bit of a circus?

We stayed in the gaslamp quarter in San Diego, would defo recommend. Plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you busy, ocean beach is worth a visit even if it's just to sit on the beach for the day and have a wander round.

On a similar note, where is hot first week of October? I've not got a huge budget so somewhere Europe/cheap would be great.

Head as far south as you can!
I went to Lisbon last October - long weekend and had one day of rain (pretty heavy but everyone said that was really rare) the rest of the time was mid/high 20's and sunshine. Nice city too and beaches in easy access.

Found them pretty average, standard Cali coastal cities in a certain sense…Huntington maybe better because of the surf thing (shops, cafes, younger crowd etc…).
Wouldn't personally spend a day there, but a few hours won't kill you

Sevilla, or Andalucia in general
