Aye, we stayed in this one a few years ago: https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/3049916

Owned by people who own the bakery/cafe on the ground floor. The breakfast they provide is ace as all the items they offer you are freshly baked, especially the natas Cool

swede wrote: right I've contributed a tonne to this thread. reaching vietnam with the mrs in november for ~10 days. what should we do? got a lonely planet book on order. i know we are going to hoi an for a bit.. other than that unsure

I'm heading to Vietnam for just over three weeks in June, finishing off with 5/6 nights in HK. Will update when done.

Current plan is:

Ho Chi Minh > Nha Trang > Da Nang (staying in Hoi An) > Hue > Hanoi (+Ha Long Bay)

Any advice or things to do welcome

Thats a great route and a decent amount of time.

Lots of great food in Ho Chi Minh, can’t really go wrong. I can’t remember names of anything other than L’usine which is a nice brunch spot, good juices etc. We also went to a great place that was owned by an architect and in a converted house, all specialities from different parts of Vietnam - if I can remember what it’s called I’ll post!

war museum there is pretty harrowing but worth visiting.

Am off to Florence for 3 days next week, has anyone got some suggestions for bars, restaurants and stuff to do other than the usual galleries? Please and thanks.

For a steak, check out i’tuscani.
Is around 90€ for a 1kg bistecca alla fiorentina, with grilled veg, grilled potato and unlimited wine. Really good meal.

L’girone de ghiotti for amazing cheap sandwiches. They’ve got a moretti gran riserve beer which is nice as well.

Osteria all'Antico Vinaio for great sandwiches, focacce and cured meats in general
Il Santino is great for Italian cuisine, with dishes from all over the country.
Il Santo Bevitore, owned by the same people and just around the corner from Il Santino, offers various small plates\snacks\cheese\panini.

If you want to try something very local you can go for a Lampredotto sandwich, filled with slow cooked in broth cow stomach (the fourth and very last part of it) or for a Pappa al pomodoro, a tomato soup made with tomatoes, bread, garlic, basil and olive oil to be eaten with bread. Also worth mentioning chicken liver patè served on toasted bread, made with chicken livers, capers and anchovies fillets (Crostini di fegato).

If you go for a Fiorentina (t-bone steak with weight between 1-1.5 kg, not less, not more) the right price is around 3.5\4€ x 100g.

Gustarium is great for lunch, but can get expensive if you overestimate portions as the slices are done by weight.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Baglioni, which has a great rooftop bar which I think you can use as a non resident. It's opposite the station.

WP Lovari is good for shopping and Il Bussetto's shop/workshop is nearby if you want any leather things embossed.

What's a good resource for an upcoming japan trip? Tried monocle, natgeo and lonely planet guides but they are all regurgitating the same old cliche wank.

Been done to death I’m sure, but best area to stay in Tokyo?
Loads of hotels to choose from, have seen a decent one in Roppongi.
Only other areas I can think to stay in are Shinjuku, Harajuku or Shibuya.
