I bought a load of stuff to build a super detailed 1/48 scale A-10 Thunderbolt II, including photo-etched brass upgrades to the kit parts and superior aftermarket decals. It's years since I last built a model (other than architectural), it's going to be a mission but I thought I'd bite the bullet seeing as we're likely to be at home a lot this year.

I'm not doing this old school green camo scheme, I'm doing the current two-tone ghost grey paintjob and upgrading all the details from the original A-10a to the modernised A-10c. I might also do a section of the runway at the USAF air base in Bagram to sit it on.

BRRRRT!!

Honestly a fair bit. It started out as a whim but then I got completely drawn into it, researching every last detail of the plane and their deployment as well as all the modelling techniques. Breaks down as follows:

The base kit - £35
Various upgrades to the kit - £45
Paints including primer and weathering washes - £65
Glues etc. - £20
Various tools and peripheral stuff - £70
Airbrush and compressor - £180???

Gulp, I better not fuck it up. Obviously there is a load of stuff that you could use again and again. I suppose it's daft buying all the gumpf to build just one model, but if it goes well maybe I'll do another…

That is bad ass Superprecise. Glad you decided to do it right but maybe, just maybe practice on less bad ass kit first. Like some airfix piece of shit, just to get your airbrush technique right. I love Tamiya, I use it on the brush for wargaming figures which is scoffed at by wargamers but everyone agrees the jap stuff, Tamiya and Mr Hobby, are the best for any airbrush.

Warthogs are the .50 cal M2 heavy machineguns of aircraft, so bad ass, they just keep usin em.

I remember reading about Warthogs when I was a kid, this book had a picture of a valkswagon next to the gatling cannon that's inside it. The cannon plus ammo storage was bigger than the valkswagon..

nah the stuff now is better. We never had photo etched brass parts in the '90s, or at least not widely available. The paints/airbrush is the same. Wish I had today's Gundam kit tech when I build my S-Gundam in the '90s..I never had an airbrush setup but Tamiya spraycans are still really good. Fine application and don't stink out your place ie you can spray indoors and it's not too bad. Games Workshop sprays, while hardcore for a coat of paint will coat everything in your place with a fine coat of it if you use indoors. I learnt this the hard way.

I'm not into ultra realism anyway, I'm more into represenative and accurate colors on the battlefield. I'm not making dioramas or show pieces, I'm making wargaming figures. I prefer my models to do something, like I dunno, seek out, close with and destroy their enemy?

and I ditched them dumb GW slotta bases real soon after these guys actually went into battle

Mil, that's a good shout, I had thought to get some ropey old kit to practice on, I just can't find anything quite as dirt cheap as I'd like. Also considering swapping the federal code colour Ammo paints I got for the main colours of the airframe for MRP paints, which I've read great things about. I guess I'll try out the stuff I have and see how I get on. You hear some nightmare stories of people using the wrong clear coats etc and fucking up their model totally. It's not completely new to me having done a bit back in the day but, but I want to have it planned out properly.

Ah missed this. THAT's the pic I remember! Tanks for posting. I say tanks because the GAU 8 is capable of blowing away main battle tanks! SO bad ass..anyway yeah that sounds good..how's progress going on the kit?

I painted up the hands of one of my fictional US Navy Cold War gone Hot Corpsman, Davis, circa '88, made it look like he's wearing black leather gloves for rapelling, my Marine had pilot gloves already but Davis, the Navy Corpsman had bare hands.

Check it out. Valejo premium white primer (works on soft plastic), 2 coats of valejo matt black and a coat of valejo premium matt varnish for durability when he next goes out into combat on "THE MOUNTAIN" (TM).

Back to front hat notwithstanding I don't see that as the most offensive look in the world tbh.
