As long as you aren't spoiling the game for everyone else i would say that's fine. Depends what kind of tone is set early, although i'd assume if he's gone to the trouble of hiring a professional dealer he'd want a serious game.

Go, get drunk, bet aggressively and early, they'll be glad of the extra money in the pot.

calling tax experts…

we want to take on a designer, but just for two or three days per week max. we don't intend to employ this person long-term, for numerous reasons, and i'm quite happy to pay them as a freelancer.

i was quite innocently telling my bookkeeper this the other day, and she reckons the taxman will be most upset with me if i do this. anyone got any experience of this?

daft bint Laughing out loud whats her reasoning behind that then?

Get the designer to invoice you for their work rather than you 'stick them on your payroll' for any work conducted. That way the designer sorts his/her own tax affairs out themselves and you just make a normal payment for any work that has been billed.

Edit: but you know about my recent run in with the tax man so make of that what you will Laughing out loud

assuming they are already self-employed then there is no problem - as San says, they invoice you, you pay them a fee, they pay their tax
