Agreed! There should be more room for discussion that avoids conforming to the 'culture war' / divisive narrative.

Ofcom investigating after 41,000 complaints, which is pushing for the most complained about TV moment by all accounts.

Piers is such a cunt, the same cunt trying to steal Diana's diaries if I remember to publish. Regardless of what you feel about Meghan, I can understand why Harry hates the tabloids since his mother died due in fact by the paparazzi parasites, and the same kind are now hounding his wife.

to be honest I am not anti-royalist at all. i don't mind the royal family (aside from the sex trafficking/racism scandals). they pull in a lot of tourists to the UK. a lot of americans (and other europeans, incl. swedes who have their own royals) love the royal family…

"but by collectively buying into that pretence the nation is better off."

This is the fundamental point, and sorry, while you put it eloquently I think you are wrong. The whole thing entrenches Inheritance through birth, not earning through merit.

I think along the same lines as swede. Only caveat is they have to do the play the whole royal service role. If you decide you want to be out and live your own life in the US then fine but you should be effectively cut off at that point (which I think he said happened).

Would it not pull in more tourists if you could visit Buckingham Palace all year round rather than have to peer through the gates? Versailles still gets a lot of visitors and it's not as central to Paris as Buckingham is to London.

Puzzled I very much doubt we will ever live in a meritocracy regardless to be honest. Plus, what even is a meritocracy anyway? Everything from our work ethic, resilience, inteliigence, positivity etc is all bred or hard-wired in to you anyway.

I genuinely don’t think so at all. The whole royal fantasy thing that foreigners have is all based on it being an operational thing and seeing the weddings, pomp etc. You take that away, it becomes a massive national trust site of far more limited interest

a meritocracy has social mobility allowing equal opportunity to everyone, not just thoise born into wealth. You can doubt it all you like, the queen is the head of a class system which keeps most of you plebs down, and Mercibeau's tugging of his forelock saying its better for all of us is what I'm challenging.

It's no coincidence that nearly all politicians go through eton and oxford, then award contracts to their unqualified tory chums, they know us plebs are complicit and have been sold a pup whereby it's divine right.

The best way to get on in this country is to be born rich.

ah RichGee but you see all of those tories have their ethics, resilience, inteliigence [sic], positivity etc all bred or hard-wired in to them, so they deserve to rule over us.

The tourism money argument is brainwashing.

Besides, surely this goes beyond that. I will never understand how it sits well with people that there are people whose ENTIRE LIFE, from birth, is funded by the general public. These same people who will argue to the death about giving people on benefits/the NHS/social causes an extra few quid per year. Baffling.

The 'life of service' thing is also bollocks. Apart from the Queen and her immediate family, what do the rest of them do?
