Well done GG Cool

Thanks for the info on my calves everyone, after talking to people who had shin splints I'm pretty sure it's not that.
I do get a bit of a shooting pain up my left leg that feels like sciatica but the opposite way round so maybe tendon related. I don't have the right footwear to run off road atm but I intend getting some when the weather gets abit better. And I do train my legs once a week in the gym (when it's open)
I have been forced into a proper rest now anyway as I've done my bloody back in now aswell ffs

If anyone sees those satisfy shorts in a large give me a shout please

Calf issues can also be caused by hamstring tightness. I realised my hamstrings ROM was very low and causing issues with lots of movements.

These stretches have been working nicely for hamstrings for me;

https://youtu.be/MhRUum23nSU

This one is nice for calves directly too tho you’re probably already doing it

https://youtu.be/27hP-Y0ED_8

The more reading I do about flexibility and joint care the more it seems that everything is connected; where you feel some muscular or joint pain is not necessarily the cause.

I started by assessing personal problem areas by following stretches and seeing where I’m limited; for me it’s the shoulders, hips, hamstrings and ankles that need a lot of work. Weirdly lots of hip issues are caused by muscular imbalances in the lower back so I have started focusing on that too.

FWIW I used to have some sciatica pain in my left leg when the leg is straight and the foot is planted and I try to rotate hips/upper left leg. That went away after about a week of hamstring focus.

Lockdown has driven me to enter a 50km ultra in August. I’ve also got a marathon to run in Oct.

I’ve never even ran the marathon distance before so the ultra should be interesting. Laughing out loud

Here’s hoping both races go ahead. Cool

Good luck mate Cool

I have always had lower back issues, I tore a muscle in it when I was young and its never been right since.
One thing I am wondering is if it could be my form or even shoes? It's weird that it's only down the outer sides of my calves the only orher slight pains I'm getting are my ankles feel dodgy and the sciatic pain in my left leg. I've done about 500k in my shoes (NB1080 v10) I'm 90 odd kg, reckon they need replacing? or should they be good? My feet flap about abit and I run on the outside of my feet push off on all toes though I think, I walk like angry Liam galager Laughing out loud

I think the root of the issue is probably your lower back injury and it’s effects on the posterior chain; but please don’t take my opinion too seriously as I have only been into anatomy stuff for a couple months so I know very little… and of course I’m not a doctor/sports/science professional.

Here’s a foam roller routine that also shows you how to get the outside calf effectively if you want some pain relief:

You need Bob&brad. Check them out on YouTube. They fixed my bad lower back pain when I run. The best exercise is hanging off a bar and sticking your feet in the ground behind you. Also need to introduce deadlifts as it won't ever go away completely without strengthening.

Great job GG. May need to dip into this thread more.

Just started running again and am definitely getting into it. I will be honest I have been really struggling mentally since the arrival of the baby. I am not looking for sympathy, but I am strongly tempted to start a thread on here for Dads. I know I am new, and I know that there people who have been doing it a lot longer than me, but I also know there are people in a similar position to me on here and the best thing is to be open, if comfortable.

The downs at the moment:
I have increased my dosage of Sertraline
I have tarted taking Beta-Blockers
I am re-using Headspace again, which I had before when I was feeling really low
I am looking at CBT again

The highs at the moment:
Running - I am not sure why I haven't been out of the house as much over the last year, but was exercising before during 2020, when running/cycling, because I felt it was expected of me to do so for the sake of being 'active' and 'healthy'. I walk a fair amount, but don't purely exercise as much.

Since I started running again last week, my mental health during and after has been really good. Sea air is a bonus as well.

Definitely need to keep it up, but, as I say, will dip back in here every so often for inspiration. Off to look at more of Satisfy's stuff. Laughing out loud Their shorts are the best I have seen/used for running, not least because they have a waistband pocket that fits a Galaxy Note 20!

How many km for the month MrW?

I started the month off well but didn't have the knees for a half or getting anywhere near the crazy numbers being posted in here .

I'm happy with my numbers though.
Month total: 125km
5k run: new PB
10k run: new PB
Average pace for the month: 4:51 mins per km.

Currently sidelined with a groin niggle and have more or less replaced every missed km with a unit of alcohol. Laughing out loud

Can’t wait to get back to it.

Nice one smith & ODB Cool

Easy one this month, just shy of 75 miles / 120km but VO2 up to 63, also been on the turbo a fair bit due to snow & crap weather. Looking forward to pools opening soon and hopefully getting some tri's lined up for the summer.

I had a decent month for me, managed 113.8 km this month and set a new 5k PB of 28:41 too.

Good work everyone, smith, GG, ODB.

Trying to beat or atleast get close to last years total KM which was just over 2500km, but struggled last month with the cold weather( I can’t stand running in anything less than 5 degrees) so trying to play catch up. Done 100km last week with a half on Saturday and Sunday and really enjoying it again.

Been going well, done over 200 miles this year. Ran a half on Sunday in 1:34:05 which I'm really pleased with. All going to plan the target now would be to get that under 1:30, but a fair bit off that at the moment.
