Just cancelled golf, so it really is bad if I do that.
WTF is going on Sad

if it makes you feel any better, i slept so badly that i've just turned up at work.

maybe it's not your sleeping, maybe you've actually done a little damage somewhere…extensive keyboard use? i feel all dr bobo, apologies for seemingly awful advice.

just came accross this problem i am trying to get my head around, i dont think the answer is as obvious as it seems, or is it??!

If a plane is attempting to take off on a runway, but the runway is a conveyor belt which moves in the opposite direction as the plane at exactly the same speed, will the plane take off?

Wont it just stay still? Just like you have to run at the same speed as a running machine to stay on the same spot. No?

well i think so? but what about the jets? or would they just cause the wheels to turn faster?

Laughing out loud You said they were both the same speed, if the pilot fiddled with his nobs (no homo) to make the plane go faster, then then converyor belt wouldn't be at the planes 'exact same speed' would it!

agreed, but the jets! these are blowing air out the back generating airspeed no ???

Laughing out loud gods its late

my thoughts are it goes against the principles which get and keep the plane in the air. won't work

A plane needs air to flow over it for it to fly, got no chance!

Without wind going over the wings what is there to give it lift?

If a plane is attempting to take off on a runway, but the runway is a conveyor belt which moves in the opposite direction as the plane at exactly the same speed, will the plane take off?

Air particles is what will give the wings on the plane "lift".
If they're moving at the exact same speed then the plane is stationary relative to the air. Relatively, theres no motion between the plane and the air, therefore its not going to take off.

Actually….this scenario is just like picking up a plane and spinning its wheels, the planes thrust is opposing the motion of the conveyor belt instead of picking it up…..

Hmm…..maybe the second bit sounds a bit weird Puzzled

PS Physics ROCKS Cool

agred with the airflow on the wings, however will the plane move or not?
While the conveyor belt will roll with the wheels, will the plane not move given the the thrust from the jet engines?? 0 ground speed but + airspeed so to speak?

my guess is it wont move? as the wheels and the conveyor belt are going in the same direction?
