Democracy of a sort in many instances…Belarus is still a dictatorship

That would be an example of illiberal democracy. Russia is a shining example. They need not intimidate the voters and rig the ballot. Medvedev and Putin are very popular. How could you not like Putin though?

Fair points, I'm in.

Today I'm slightly obsessed with sleep (as I am severely lacking in it)…

-The record for the longest period without sleep is 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon. The record holder reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech and memory and concentration lapses.

reminds me of that channel 4 show shattered that was on 5years or so ago.,
there was this guy from uni on it http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/S/shattered/participants/chris.html
we hated each other, guy was a complete cock. so glad he didnt win.
but yeah they tried to do sleepless for a week maybe? cant remember but yeah they started going mad, and the doctors said they had to sleep, meaning the whole show was pointless. i think they finished and found the winner, by having a sleep off.

ahh just remembered i think the cunt quit uni and went off to be famous, haha.
seeming as he was at broadcast school, he should have known what happens to cunts on these programs.

Medvedev and Putin are popular, but Russia isn't really a shining example of an illiberal democracy at all - the government effectively controls the media and there were irregularities in the selection of candidates

Kazakhstan is another on that list that isn't a true democracy - it declared itself an independent country in 1991, and the former Communist leader Nursultan Nazarbayev became President and has been ever since

"In June 2007, Kazakhstan's parliament passed a law granting President Nursultan Nazarbayev lifetime powers and privileges, including access to future presidents, immunity from criminal prosecution, and influence over domestic and foreign policy. Critics say he has become a de facto "president for life." Laughing out loud

first published between 1888-1894 in 11 volumes in Amsterdam by the Belgian-born bookseller/publisher Auguste Brancart. For the next hundred years, it remained banned and considered obscene and pornographic.

it has been passed from one famous celebrity to the next, owned at one point by silent movie star Harold Lloyd:

it contains the word 'cunt' 5357 times, and 'gamahuche' 227 - which, apparently, is an obsolete word for oral sex. it is by far one of the most sexually explicit texts ever published, during one of the most sexually repressed periods in history.

and, best of all, almost all of the text is available online: http://www.csufresno.edu/folklore/drinkingsongs/html/books-and-manuscripts/1800-1899/1888-my-secret-life/index.htm

that sounds interesting. i'm gonna give it a read. thanks!

Today I am slightly obsessed with…19th century imperial Europe. Again.

I keep getting dragged in to Wikipedia, clicking links and clicking links and getting deeper and deeper into the subject.

Giuseppe Garibaldi was mentioned on QI earlier. I knew a bit about him before, but looked him up. He was born in Nice, which was French at the time of his birth, then Sardinian, then Italian.

I didn't know he had fought in the Uruguayan Civil War, and that led me onto the Italian Wars of Independence, then the French Revolution, then on to the Marquis de Lafayette who fought in both the French Revolution and the American Revolutionary War.

I really need to stop now

Street names are another interesting subject - there's a Boulevard MacDonald in Paris which is named after Etienne Jacques Joseph Alexandre MacDonald, whose father moved to France following the failure of the Jacobite Rising of 1745/6.

I've never thought of pub names as particularly interesting, although some of the old ones are quite good

My favourite is probably the Settle Inn in Stirling

just went and had another look at pub names and it took me into learning about duck baiting.
