In response to the "gimmicks" I think you're probably referring to the grav pockets, which I think is the least used feature of the garment, but beyond that I wouldn't say anything on the garments are gimmicks. everything is crafted with intent and function ie: excape zips / button snap closure systems / drawcord pulls etc…
Yeah but your other stuff too, the inflatable insulator with the pull out mouthpiece you did years back, the rig-able (with ACR's uparmored version of MOLLE) solar panel charger, the IEM earphone magnets in the collars, superman escape system, integrated carry slings. I love gimmicks, I don't mean it in a negative way, I love Sony products because of all the bullshit gimmicks they put in, but in a stylish and (usually) functional way. We can thank Sony for backlit remote controls from the late 80s. I mean not only was it useful at night, it was an accessory and a status symbol. Have it clipped onto your ECWCS or Ape snowboard jacket, lighting up when you accessed functions, that looked cool..
I agree ACR gimmicks are incredible and implemented in a way that you can actually use. I have to admit I'm all for function but I'm into aesthetic and "kanji" or "feeling" more. I like how old taps also takes inspiration from stuff I've always been into gear wise, sports and hip hop. The readypack bag system they did with Porter is heavy, bulky, with superfluous details (zip overhangs in the wrong direction so they actually CATCH water in the rain). Stylistics from 5D has the BDUB roller bag but he hardly ever takes it on trips because the bag itself takes up most of the weight allowance on flights. It's ridiculously over engineered shit made by people that don't really understand what real world operators want or use but have a geeky fascination with the world of special forces and the visuals and terminology associated with that. That's another thing I love about taps, all the slogans. They're so random but considered. I know ACR has designed shit for GSG9 or some shit and MILSPEC stuff is great, I have a decent US collection. but I would never wear it much. I want that urahara feeling I had the first time I went there, not necessarily world's best tech (ACR).
