It depends what area he likes - they all have different tastes, from sweet (lowland) through to almost medicinally peaty (islay).
I like the less peaty, sweeter, smoky whiskies and my personal fav is http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-4688.aspx
If you wanted to go for a "big brand" but not one of the obvious ones I'd go for http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-3506.aspx
That Macallan is very fine indeed. Probably my favourite money:taste single malt.
In return for all of this top Xmas prezzy info you can send me your Horsehide Elmendorf

seenmy get yourself down to Royal Mile Whiskies, they have a branch at 3 Bloomsbury Street in London.
If you can find out some names of what your dad already has / likes, they should be able to advise something to his taste. As Toasted said, it depends very much on the area, and whisky drinkers do tend to have favourite areas / tastes.
That Macallan is very good, and easy to drink so is a safe option. It's not a strong enough flavour for me, but is nice.
