ADs google you, look at your house on streetview, check you out on linkedIN/Facebook/insta etc and try to find out what car you drive. If they think you can't afford three roleys a year and most likely are a flipper they'll add you to a waiting list* and look at your purchase history of non-rolex watches to decide if you're wort their time.
There is no system other than assessing your income and calculating if you're likely a flipper or keeper.
*Technically there is none but a good AD might keep you on their own made up one

Sub has stopped, won't wind. Best to pop it into Rolex or an indi repairer for a service?

I’ve heard good things about Stephen Hale, they did a great job on a friend of mines Rolex.

Last time I enquired with SH - turnaround longer than via Rolex London, and no cheaper.

For a watch that old I’d go with Rolex

Rolex quoted me £450 for a service of an old Air King, with any replacement parts I reckon the service could be up to £700
would indy be significantly cheaper?

For a watch that old I’d avoid going with Rolex unless you specifically request they don’t change out any of the parts that hold the watches value.

You get that option now - had my explorer serviced via Rolex London - before any work was done, you are offered full options of replacing hands / bezel / dial / bracelet etc (with pricing) - with the option in turn to keep any old bits you had replaced.
Turnaround was about 4 weeks.
If you want a decent independent I can recommend a chap down in Kent. Lots of London dealers outsource to him.

Would just be internals + few new pins in the strap, although there's a scuff on the cyclops that I haven't managed to fully polish out - cheers all ,probs stick with Rolex, thought it would be circa £500 +
