Right on your budget.
If you could manage an extra £200 this is lovely

Been on a few weeks so might get reduced, but equally could sell out Some nice Hamiltons on the Maxx atm
TK Maxx stock photos do those watches no justice.
The one in the second link is a beauty IMO.
Great review on it here.

Anywhere I can read up on them?
Ideally want something with tritium lume so that it’ll age nicely. Looking to buy a speedy but have no clue about the references etc
Just received a ‘95 3592.50 which is one of the last of the tritium dials I think. Depends how you feel about display backs but these have are hesalite with a sapphire back, I guess 3590.50 would be the regular caseback.

CWC would be a good shout;

A lot of history and supplier for the British army.
Seiko would have some good watches within that range
Or a cheaper end Christopher Ward

You can also get some nice vintage watches for that budget.
I have a Zenith Pilot Military watch from World War II that would fit your budget, but there are other options as well.
Really like the field watch look, budget of around £500, which brands should i be looking at?
complete watch noob here, currently wear a timex expedition but looking for an upgrade.
