Talk talk is an ultimate bitch when it comes to online gaming, particularly with an xbox.
Ive never heard of Homecall Broadband, and it could be the same story, perhaps even worse.
Forget about connecting to live via the pc—this can just confuse things. Im assuming that
you've tried simply plugging the ethernet cable from the router into the back of his xbox?
Ip failing is different from the NAT settings now thinking more about it. Best to give the Homecall a call and tell them
what you're trying to do—there are certain ports that an isp has to have open if you can't connect
and tried everything else. You might also have to set up a static ip on your xbox.
Ive probably confused things even further but type in Homecall xbox live into google or the type
of the router (name and model number) and xbox live and this might bring up some resolutions.

Right, there's plenty of tutorial on YouTube, but the jist is:
There should be two connections in his "Manage Network Connections", one for his internet, and one for the xbox (probably called "Local Area Connection"). He needs to shift select both of em, and right click and bridge them. Enable the bridge and test the connection on the xbox. You may also need to right click the internet connection, go to sharing, and check both boxes about enabling other devices to connect through this connection.

Cheers velvetant. I haven't actually tried connecting the modem direct to his Xbox, if I did this how would the modem dial up to the internet, which the user has to initiate on the PC? Worth a try I guess, but unsure how it will establish an internet connection..

Make sure the xbox is connected to the PC via ethernet, when it happens a pop up shoud open in the bottom right hand corner, something about a media centre detected or something

Ahh, i see > has to dial up. Worth giving a direct connection a try, but like you said, i don't think the xbox will initiate the dialing up process by itself.
What are his upload speeds anyway? If they are really low, there is not much point playing over live. You will have a laggy connection. Best, of course, to get
him to change to a better isp, or probably better still, best to get him to give Homecall a call and explain that he' trying to connect to xbox live/use online gaming
via a console and they'd talk him through it. Reason im in the mood for helping is that i've dealt with this over xmas with 2 friends, both of whom were on god awful isp's for gaming.
