Sony already announced the PS4 wouldn't support backward compatibility either. This is due to switch in the new CPU from the current gen PowerPC architecture. Neither company wanted to do this. If you already own a PS3 or Xbox 360, you will very likely find the space and it won't be costing you any extra to continue playing your current/old favorites, whilst owning a next gen console. You'll just be inconvenienced switching between the two.
i have to say, its so funny when the new consoles come out, with all the fanboys taking their sides etc. ignoring all the gimmicks and tv/internet stuff, it'll still do what the 360 will do, but with better graphics for the newer games, thats all i care about. will probably keep the kinect in the box

Stream gaming, just like OnLive and content will of course be limited. Expect Microsoft to follow suit. I'm certain that both PSN / XBL will eventually have classics in their marketplace for download, as they currently do with their digital download libraries. Keeping your old console will remain the best option for your back catalog gaming.
Looks terrible, will still likely pick one up but not for like 2 years, still got mounds of ps3/360 games I need to complete that I never get round to playing.
