I thought about this yesterday. My maintenance loan didn't cover my accommodation fully, so my parents are having to put 970 quid a year to make up for the rest. It depends if your getting grants, gutting to see my mate who lives with his mum getting 3k of grant or something a year while his dad is well off and is paying for his accommodation.

Student finance are taking the piss.. On the upside though I think if your in a position where your struggling to pay for your accommodation straight away, a lot of universities take this into considersation (from what i've heard from previous years) and let you pay the first term's in instalments.

Location is a little bit out of the way (compared to other halls anyway) in Victoria Park behind Manchester Royal hospital. They're quite nice halls though.

Which MMU campus are you at? All Saints? If so the ones nearer there would probably be better for you if they still have places.

Yeah my rent is just covered by my loan but leaves nothing to live on or pay for bills. I have savings and luckily these arent taken into account when they assess me for grants etc as I am going as an individual, i,e without looking at parents income. Would be screwed without them though!

Not a huge amount of stuff on your doorstep, couple of nice pubs like the Rampant Lion but you can get into town/All Saints in about 10mins on the bus and its a very regular service. Could do a lot worse, but as Davinho says go as close to MMU (and city centre) as possible imo. Also the beds may be bunk where you go up a ladder?

Its hard to get a job when you cant tell people when your able to work as you dont have a timetable yet. And the fact Manchester has the largest student population in Europe or something daft means its hard to get anything!

I'm going to the University of Manchester, not MMU, but it's a late application for an MA. Are the private halls split between MMU and Manchester Uni? I was going to go to either Daisybank cos they look nice, or Metlock becuase they're right next to the uni and a couple of mates are going there.

i'm getting transferred and cutting my hours down to only 4 a week, seems pointless, but it is a nice extra £100 a month or something. the main reason i'm doing it is so that when i come back over summer i can work at my home store full time and grab all the overtime i can.

no way i could afford uni without my parents help.

Job at uni was the best thing i ever did. So much more income than without, meant i could properly enjoy myself when i wanted to (drugs, takeaways e.t.c).

whatever you do don't get a job in a bar, club or on the weekend there is nothing worse than watching your mates have a good time while your pouring pints for minimum wage or having that nagging feeling in the back of your head saying 'don't do those shots, your working at 8 in the morning.'
